Oldest contemporary music festival in Estonia since 1979

In 1979, Jaan Rääts initiated the Soviet Estonian Music Festival as the head of the Composers' Union, the name of which was changed to the Estonian Music Days in 1991. Estonian Music Days continues to be one of the most large-scale music festivals in Estonia and internationally.
How did the festival start and what is the phenomenon of the festival in modern times? "This is how the idea of organizing a festival with domestic contemporary music was born in Composers Union, the chairman of which was Jaan Rääts at the time. The orientation of the Estonian music festival was clearly debated in the board of the Estonian Composers' Union" (EMIK 2020) It was discussed whether it would make sense to show the music of all composers or only the best works. "Rääts' point was - the festival is primarily intended to present the music of all composers who are writing music." (EMIK 2008) Jaan Rääts: "It is not only the composers' task to write music, but the Composers Union task is to make sure that the music reaches the listeners. In the beginning, we did musical Thursdays in the second floor hall of the Composers Union and they were also broadcast on TV, which were very popular. It was a great time. All the celebrities of the time performed there - from Joala onwards." (Rääts, 2012) Jaan Rääts: "When I used to visit Arnold Green or Valter Klauson in the Council of Ministers, money for composers would come. The first Mammut concert took place simultaneously in all the halls of the Estonia building, from the basement to the attic. As it happened, that first Mammut concert ended in a truly mammoth way." The first Soviet Estonian Music Festival took place from 7-16 February 1979. "During the 10 days there were 18 concerts, 8 theatre performances, a press conference, and two listening sessions of tape music at HL. (EMIK 2020). "A special event was the Night Concert - the predecessor of the later Mammutkontsert, inspired by the contemporary music concerts at the Blackheads' House and the scandalous experimental concerts at the Tallinn Writers' House, which featured the "heavyweights" of Estonian music life at the time: Kuldar Sink, Jaan Rääts, Arvo Pärt, Arbo Valdma, Toomas Velmet, Kalle Randalu and others." /.../ (EMIK 2020) The innovative festival of Estonian music gave composers the chance to write new works and created the opportunity for a wide dissemination of their compositions. "Concert schedules were discussed and agreed at the HL, the festival was organised by the Estonian National Philharmonic during the Soviet period, and the musical theatres were involved (EMIK 2020). The festival concerts took place in various cultural institutions. The programme of the first festival included a large number of works by Estonian composers. All the programmes of the EMP can be found on the website of the Estonian Music Information Centre.12 The programme of the first Soviet Estonian Music Festival, 7-16 February 1979, is also presented as a whole. The EMP is a long-standing festival that has survived various social circumstances, which shows the sense of perspective and innovation of its initiators. Jaan Rääts, as the cultural organiser, succeeded, as the director of the HL, in involving the central music collectives, theatres and top interpreters of the Estonian SSR, from Estonia and abroad, which were active at the time, in the broad promotion of new works by Estonian composers and the promotion of Estonian national culture. There was particularly close cooperation with Estonian Television and Estonian Radio, which broadcast live to listeners and viewers. Thanks to Eesti Television and Eesti Radio, all the premieres of Estonian composers' works were recorded, which in the modern context is a crucial aspect of preserving Estonian national culture through the ages. |

Jaan Rääts /.../ initiated Estonian Music Days 1979 Reet Remmel: In 1979, the Composers Union, headed by Jaan Rääts, initiated the Estonian Music Days festival of new music, which is the oldest music festival still in existence. The Estonian Music Days have given listeners and composers alike the opportunity to hear dozens of new works performed live in the spring." (Remmel, 2021) Peeter Vähi: 'The Estonian Music Festival is the longest-running music festival in Estonia, dating back to 1979. It was still very much in the depths of the Soviet era, but at the same time it was looking for change. There were no other festivals like this in other countries, such as Armenia, Ukraine, Belarus, for example, which were 100 per cent dedicated to the local music of one small country, in this case Estonian music. It was a very exceptional event" (Vähi, 2021). Alo Põldmäe: "It is important for the composer that the work does not remain in a drawer. For the festival, people were also more ambitious in the way they wrote their work, everyone wanted to show their good work. The festivals took place every year. But time went by quickly, one festival ended and another one started. So many new works were born. /.../ Jaan was always on our side and he was never opposed to the events we organised, which involved the authors and benefited the audience. /.../ "Jaan wanted the works of as many composers as possible to be represented./.../ Jaan wanted that, if composers had written works, all these works should definitely be represented at the festival."
